Magento Gift Cards: More Than a Holiday Product

Magento Gift Cards: More Than a Holiday Product

A gift card is not just a December SKU. For a Magento store it's prepaid cash from a new customer, a retention hook that brings people back, a goodwill gesture that defuses complaints, and a refund alternative that keeps money in the business. Treating gift cards as a seasonal product means running one of your most flexible tools two months a year and ignoring it the other ten.

What makes a gift card more than a holiday product?

The mechanics that make gift cards useful at Christmas work all year. A gift card is money paid to you now for a purchase made later, often by a different person, sometimes never redeemed at all. That single structure - prepaid, transferable, deferred - is what lets one product do acquisition, retention, cash flow, and customer service, depending on how you point it.

Grid of gift card use cases beyond holidays: customer acquisition, retention, referral rewards, goodwill gestures, corporate gifting, and refund alternatives
Same product, six jobs. Most stores only ever ask it to do the first one, in December.

Here's what each use actually does for the business:

Use What it does
Acquisition A gift recipient is a new customer who arrives with money already loaded and a reason to spend it
Retention A balance on your store is a standing reason to come back rather than shop elsewhere
Referral reward A "give and get" credit turns happy customers into a low-cost acquisition channel
Goodwill A small credit resolves a complaint faster and cheaper than an argument
Corporate gifting Bulk orders from businesses for staff or clients, often at higher volumes
Refund alternative Offered (never forced) on a discretionary return, it keeps the money in the store

What's the cash-flow angle nobody mentions?

Gift cards are prepaid revenue, and the accounting treats them differently from a normal sale in a way that matters. When someone buys a gift card, you've taken the cash but not yet delivered the goods, so the amount is a liability on your books until it's redeemed - not profit. The money is real and in your account; the margin isn't earned until the card is spent.

This is where merchants get tripped up in their reporting. If your profit reporting counts a gift card purchase as revenue like any other order, your margins look inflated in the selling period and depressed in the redemption period. The correct treatment is to recognise the gift card as a deduction from revenue at purchase and let the actual products carry the margin when the card is redeemed. It's a small distinction that stops gift card season from lying to you about how profitable it was.

How this applies to Magento 2

Magento Open Source has no native gift card product - the gift card type is an Adobe Commerce feature, the paid tier. So a Community Edition store that wants gift cards is building or installing them, not switching on a setting. That's worth knowing before you plan a gift card campaign on Open Source: the whole product type, redemption logic, balance tracking, and email delivery are yours to add.

The practical requirements for a Magento gift card that earns its keep: a proper product type customers can personalise, email delivery with a redeemable code, redemption that applies cleanly at checkout including when a card covers the whole order, and reporting that treats the prepaid amount correctly rather than inflating margin.

Where Moogento helps

GiftEasy adds gift cards to Magento Open Source as a dedicated product type. Buyers personalise the card with sender and recipient names, a message of up to 140 characters, and an image, and can schedule it to send on a future date - useful for a birthday or a specific occasion rather than "now". Delivery is by email, carrying a redeemable code with a QR version, and redemption applies at checkout as its own total; when a card covers the full order, it settles the whole thing without needing a separate payment step. Expiry is handled at redemption against each card's own expiry date, and there's a reminder email as a card nears expiry.

The same system covers the "give and get" referral use and admin-issued store credit, so the referral and goodwill jobs in the table above run on one mechanism rather than three plugins. Two scope notes: delivery is email only, so there's no printable or physical-card path, and personalisation is a message plus an image rather than a full design studio. For most stores that's the right amount of scope.

On the reporting side, ProfitEasy gets the accounting right: it treats gift card amounts as a deduction from revenue rather than counting them as cost of goods, which is exactly the correct treatment described above - your margins reflect real product profit, not inflated gift card cash. And ThanksEasy is where a gift card offer belongs at the point of purchase: the order confirmation page is prime space to suggest a gift card to a customer who's just shown they like buying from you.

Gift card strategy checklist

  • Are gift cards available all year, or only listed in the run-up to the holidays?
  • Can a buyer personalise the card and schedule it for a future date, or is it a bare code?
  • Does your profit reporting treat gift card sales as prepaid liability, or inflate margin by counting them as normal revenue?
  • Is there a "give and get" referral option built on the same gift card mechanism?
  • When you resolve a complaint, is a goodwill credit an option your team can issue quickly?
  • Do you offer store credit as a return option (never forced) to keep discretionary refunds in the business?
  • Is there a corporate or bulk gifting path for business buyers?

FAQ

Does Magento have gift cards built in?

Only the paid Adobe Commerce tier has a native gift card product type. Magento Open Source (Community Edition) has no built-in gift card, so those stores add the product type, redemption, and email delivery through a module such as GiftEasy.

Are gift card sales counted as revenue?

Not as earned revenue at the point of sale. A gift card is prepaid money you owe as goods later, so it sits as a liability until it's redeemed, and the margin is earned when the card is actually spent. Profit reporting that counts the gift card purchase as normal revenue overstates margin in the selling period.

How can gift cards help outside the holidays?

They work as acquisition (a recipient is a new customer with money loaded), retention (a balance is a reason to return), referral rewards (give-and-get credit), goodwill gestures on complaints, corporate gifting, and a voluntary refund alternative. The prepaid, transferable structure that makes them a good Christmas gift makes them useful year-round.

Can a gift card be offered instead of a refund?

It can be offered as an option on a discretionary return, and many customers prefer it. It should never be forced in place of a refund a customer is legally entitled to - that's a different situation covered in our store credit versus refunds guide. Offered, not imposed, is the line.

Pick one non-seasonal use from the list and set it up this quarter - a give-and-get referral or a goodwill credit your support team can issue is a fast start. The product's already flexible; most stores just never point it anywhere but December.
