Semantic Search :Shoppers find what they mean, not only what they type

Made for Magento® 2

Shoppers describe it and your store finds it

Moogento

A shopper can search for "I need a light jacket for a hike" and see relevant jackets together, with the usual ways to narrow the results.
• Answers whole questions in the search box
• Built on your existing OpenSearch or Elasticsearch index
• Choose managed Moogento AI Gateway credit when eligible, or use your own provider keys

Suggestions that read the whole phrase

A grouped dropdown appears under the search box after three letters and shows products, categories, pages and blog posts that match what the shopper means.

  • Up to six products with photo and price, then matching categories
  • Matching words are highlighted so shoppers see why each item fits
  • A see-all link opens the full results for the same phrase

Questions land on your help pages

When a search reads like a question, the dropdown puts your matching pages first, so "how do I contact customer service?" leads straight to the answer.

  • Questions are spotted from their first word or a question mark
  • Shipping, returns and contact pages answer before products appear
  • Shoppers who wanted products still see them right below

Full results for full sentences

The results page ranks products by how well they fit the request, then lets shoppers filter and sort them as usual.

  • The closest match comes first, even when no product name was typed
  • Filters, sorting and price ranges work inside the matched products
  • Up to 40 judged products per search keep the list focused

A search box that fits a phone

On phones the suggestions panel spans the full screen width, so every product name and price stays readable under a thumb.

  • Full-width panel below 768 pixels
  • The same grouped results as on desktop
  • Readable on dark theme headers too

Recover the searches keyword matching misses

Most shoppers do not know your product names, so Semantic Search matches on meaning as well as on words.

Three ways to match in one ranked list

Every search combines keyword matching, exact SKU and name matches, and meaning-based matching, then merges them into a single ranking.

  • Exact SKU searches still land on the exact product
  • Descriptive searches find products that never use the same words
  • One list means shoppers never choose between two result sets

An AI judge for the top candidates

An AI relevance check reviews up to 40 eligible products for each new search and puts the strongest matches first.

  • It checks each candidate against the shopper's full request
  • Repeat searches are answered from the cache in a moment
  • Judgments only ever see public product text

Misspellings matched by meaning

Because results are matched on meaning, common slips such as "watr bottle" or "yoga pnts" often still find the right products.

  • No spelling dictionary to maintain
  • Keyword and exact matching still run alongside
  • Shoppers get useful results instead of an empty page

Search that never comes back empty

If anything stands between a shopper and a semantic answer, they get your normal keyword results instead of a broken page.

Keyword results whenever a provider stalls

A missing key, a slow provider, a spent daily allowance or an unfinished index all fall back to native Magento search automatically.

  • Shoppers always see results
  • The results page says when keyword results are showing
  • Semantic results return on their own once the cause clears

A response time you set

You decide how long a search may wait for AI providers, from a tenth of a second up to 30 seconds.

  • The default of 10 seconds favours relevance on first searches
  • Lower it when speed matters more
  • Cached searches return quickly whatever the setting

Readiness you can read at a glance

The settings page tells you in plain words whether shoppers are getting semantic or keyword results right now, and why.

  • Pending and attention counts for products being indexed
  • A clear next step when something needs your input
  • No provider call is made just to show the status

They know what they need. Your search should too.

Let shoppers search in their own words and find relevant products, pages and guides, even when they do not know the right keywords.

Your catalogue rules stay exactly as they are

Semantic Search changes which products rank first, not which products your store is allowed to show.

Native filters and sorting inside the matches

Layered navigation, sorting and paging all run on the same set of matched products.

  • Counts refer to the products the search actually matched
  • Sort by price or name without losing the matches
  • Pages stay consistent as shoppers move through them

Only products your store would show

Magento's own visibility, stock and website rules decide what is eligible before any ranking happens.

  • Products your catalogue hides stay hidden
  • Out-of-stock rules follow your catalogue settings
  • Each store view keeps its own index

Price ranges that follow the results

Price filters are rebuilt from the matched products, with an "Other price ranges" link to widen the search.

  • Price buckets fit the products on screen
  • Shoppers can step to a neighbouring range
  • Works on Luma and Hyva results pages

Every AI call stays under your control

You set what is sent, how many calls a day each store view may make, and when semantic results go live.

Daily call limits per store view

Separate daily limits for indexing and for shopper searches keep provider spend predictable.

  • Cached answers use no calls at all
  • Set a limit to zero to pause new calls
  • Failed attempts count too, so nothing runs away

A first build that finishes in a day or two

A higher allowance applies only while the first index build runs, so a large catalogue does not trickle in over weeks.

  • The default 50,000 calls a day covers about 12,000 products
  • About 60 cents of embeddings at most for that default allowance
  • Normal limits take over once the build finishes

Preview before shoppers see anything

Preview mode builds the index and lets you compare keyword and semantic results for real searches while shoppers keep native search.

  • Compare the first ten results side by side
  • Test each provider connection on demand
  • Roll back to the previous ready model in one click

You choose what is sent

Only the public product fields you select are used to understand each product, and shopper searches are never written to the log.

  • Name plus your choice of descriptions, categories and attributes
  • API keys are stored encrypted
  • Private addresses and unknown redirects are refused

Answer questions with your own content

Search covers more than products, so shoppers with a question find the page that answers it.

CMS pages and blocks in search

Choose the pages and blocks that answer common questions, and they appear in the dropdown and on the results page.

  • Up to 1,000 selected CMS pages
  • Blocks link to the public page that shows them
  • Unpublished content drops out straight away

Your public guides as Guides and Help

Add a public documentation section of your site and matching guides appear in a Guides & Help block beside the products.

  • Up to 100 guide pages from a page list or a sitemap
  • Up to six matching guides per search
  • Only the section you name is ever fetched

Blog posts and best sellers first

With the FishPig WordPress integration the dropdown shows matching blog posts, and with SmartListings the more sellable product moves up among close matches.

  • Both integrations are optional
  • Blog posts sort by best title match then newest
  • Sellability only reorders products that match about equally well

Frequently asked questions

What does Semantic Search actually do?
Semantic Search makes Magento product search understand what shoppers mean, so descriptive searches and questions return relevant products. It combines keyword, exact and meaning-based matching, checks the top candidates for relevance, and falls back to keyword results whenever it cannot answer.

How do I install Semantic Search?
Semantic Search installs with Composer and takes about five minutes, followed by an index build that runs in the background. Follow the steps in the Semantic Search user guide.

Do I need my own AI provider accounts?
Yes, you need an OpenAI API key (or an OpenAI-compatible embeddings service) and an Anthropic API key. Those providers bill you directly for usage, and the daily call limits keep that spend in your hands.

Which search engine does it need?
Semantic Search works with OpenSearch or Elasticsearch 8 as your Magento catalog search engine and needs a running Magento cron. It does not work with MySQL search.

Will it slow down my search page?
A brand-new search can take 6 to 8 seconds while the top candidates are judged, and repeat searches are answered from the cache. You set the maximum wait, and if it runs out the shopper sees keyword results straight away.

Does Semantic Search work with Hyva, Luma and Porto?
Yes, semantic results and the type-ahead dropdown work on Luma, Hyva and Porto themes.

What gets sent to the AI providers?
Only the public product fields you select and the text shoppers type into search are sent. API keys are stored encrypted, and search text, product text and keys are never written to the log.

What happens if a provider is down or my daily limit runs out?
Shoppers get your normal keyword results until the provider responds again or the next UTC day begins. Nothing breaks on the storefront.

Can I try it before shoppers see it?
Yes, Preview mode builds the index and lets you compare keyword and semantic results for your own searches while shoppers keep native search.

How are products and searches counted?
Each plan covers a number of products and semantic searches a month per website, shared by all its store views. Only enabled products that are visible in search count, a search counts once per distinct results-page query, and repeats within 30 minutes, paging, sorting, filtering and the type-ahead dropdown are free.

What happens when I reach my plan's limits?
Shoppers get your normal keyword results, so search keeps working. Products beyond your product allowance are still found by keyword search, and once the monthly search allowance is used up the store returns to semantic results at the start of the next month.

What if my catalogue is bigger than 100,000 products?
Contact us about a Custom plan with no product or search limits. The admin readiness panel shows how many products and searches you use, so you can see when you are close to a limit.

Can I send certain searches to a sale or help page?
Yes, Search Promotions shows a card linking to the CMS page you choose whenever a search matches your trigger words. Each campaign has its own store views, priority and optional start and end times.

Where can I get help?
Our team answers questions through the Moogento support desk. Setup steps and every setting are covered in the Semantic Search user guide.
