Mage Camp 2026: Three Magento Store Checks

Mage Camp 2026's main conference is in Manchester on 14 October, with fringe events on 13 October. Before the talks, try three checks on your Magento store: buy a product on a phone, test an awkward payment and compare a product's details across search and checkout. You'll arrive with a real problem to discuss, rather than a notebook waiting for one.

You don't need a twelve-tab audit. Pick one customer journey, one real device and one recent order. Then try these three checks.

A quick baseline before the conference

Give this twenty minutes, not a new project code name. Choose a bestselling product with at least one variant, open it on a phone without a warm browser cache, and go as far as a test payment. Save the page URLs, the time of day and a screen recording if your team can do that without capturing personal or card details. If the test creates an order, note its ID so you can follow it through the admin and the first customer email.

Bring the record to a developer or agency partner with one question: where did the journey stop agreeing with itself? A slow product page is one answer. A payment that succeeds while the browser says it failed is a different, more urgent one. Keeping the evidence together makes the conversation much less likely to end in “we'll look into it” purgatory.

1. Is your fast page also a fast purchase?

Karlijn Löwik's “Sitespeed Casino” session looks at knowing when to stop investing in speed. Start with the whole purchase, rather than another homepage score: a quick first page doesn't help much if the basket takes the afternoon off.

On a phone, open a popular product, choose a variant, add it to the basket and reach payment. Record where you wait. Then ask your technical lead to compare that journey with production data during a busy hour. If the product page is quick but basket or checkout stalls, another homepage polish pass can wait. The customer already has.

For bot traffic, separate the useful crawlers and genuine shoppers from requests that only consume capacity. Don't block first and ask questions later. Start with request patterns, affected paths and the hours when conversion drops, then decide what needs a rate limit, a cache change or further investigation. Our 90-day Magento operations guide has a simple owner-and-baseline table for turning that into an actual piece of work.

2. What happens when payment is awkward?

Samantha Cameron's Mage Camp talk is on payments, fraud and friction beyond the checkout. The quickest store-side check is deliberately unglamorous: use a test payment that fails or requires another step, then see what the buyer is told.

Can they tell whether an order exists? Can they retry safely? Does the confirmation email agree with what the success page says? Follow the same order into the admin too. A payment flow that looks tidy on the storefront but leaves the team deciphering order status has only moved the confusion downstairs.

The success page deserves its own look. It should give a clear order number and a believable next step, not just a vague promise that an email might arrive. We have a fuller checklist for the Magento thank-you page, including delivery reassurance after payment. Try the failed route as well as the happy one; the success page can't explain an order the buyer never sees.

If that hand-off is where your team loses time, ShipEasy brings payment and fulfilment information into the Magento orders grid and gives teams bulk processing tools. It won't repair a broken payment method, but it can make the orders that did land much easier to work.

3. Will a machine find the same product a human does?

Dan Coleman's “Marketing to the Machines” session brings AI-era discovery into the programme. Before adding more AI copy, check one product's basic identity across your store: name, variant, stock status, delivery promise and canonical page. Then compare the search result, product page and any feed you send to other channels.

If those disagree, the next clever layer has a shaky brief. Fixing a misleading variant name or an out-of-date delivery promise is less glamorous than an AI launch. It's also more likely to help the shopper who needs the right item by Friday.

Write down the mismatch in language a merchandiser can use. “The blue medium is in stock on the product page but unavailable in search” is actionable. “Our product data strategy needs alignment” can survive three meetings without a single SKU changing. If your catalogue is large, start with the handful of products that bring in the most orders or support questions, then repeat the check across a few different product types.

What to take away from Mage Camp

The useful follow-up isn't a slide deck full of ideas. It's one owner, one baseline and one change you can check a fortnight later. Choose the gap your own test found, then use the talks to challenge your proposed fix. Conference lanyard optional for the rest of the team.

Two other October dates offer a different way to check the same store. Our Meet Magento Germany checklist focuses on product clarity and patch ownership. The E-commerce Warsaw Expo article follows the order from checkout to the warehouse and tracking page.

FAQ

What should a Magento merchant bring to Mage Camp 2026?

Bring one real customer journey that does not behave as expected, with the product URL, device, time, order ID if there is one, and a short note on what failed. That gives you a specific question for a speaker or another merchant instead of a broad request for “best practices”. Don't bring customer payment details or personal data.

Should I change my Magento stack before the conference?

Not just to have something new to talk about. First find the slow step, failed payment state or product-data mismatch. Then ask whether the proposed change fixes that exact problem, how you will test it, and who owns the result. A new extension can help, but it should not be the first line of the diagnosis.

Is Mage Camp on 13 or 14 October?

Both dates matter, but they are different bookings. Tuesday 13 October has separately bookable fringe events; Wednesday 14 October is the main conference in Manchester. Check the current ticket and programme details before travelling.
